성형1위 한국, 통계와 게이트키핑의 함정

 이코노미스트발 한 성형관련 기사를 번역한 한국기사들이 쏟아지면서 이코노미스트에 대한 권위에 기댄 '성형 1위'라는 헤드라인이 자세히 내용은 읽지 않고 등수의 상징성과 언론사의 권위로 모든것을 비판없이 받아들이고, 사회인식은 부정적으로 공고히 했다.

 이코노미스트가 인용한 통계는 국제미용 성형수술 협회 자료. 우리가 흔히 성형이라고 하면 눈세우고, 코세우고, 턱깎는 외과적 수술을 동반하는 성형'수술'을 떠올린다. 필러나 보톡스 내지는 여드름, 검버섯제거 등 피부미용에 관련한 피부과 '시술'은 분명 수술과는 다르다. 

 이 통계는 외과적 수술과 비외과적 시술을 통틀어 건수를 집계했다. 색깔별로 비교해볼 수 있으니 바로 눈에 들어오겠지만 비외과적 시술이 압도적이다. 그러니까 피부미용을 위한 시술이 압도적으로 많은데도, 성형수술과 통합한 전체통계건수로 1위를 한것이니 당연히 자료가 말해주는 사실과 기사 헤드라인이 의미하는 바-물론 이코노미스트는 1등을 헤드라인으로 뽑지 않았다 1등놀이로 자극적인 헤드라인 좋아하는 한국기사들-는 크게 엇갈리고 있다.

 비외과적 시술은 주름을 펴고, 라인을 부드럽게 하며, 제모가 전체 건수의 반이상을 차지한다. 보톡스 혼자 3백만건에 달한다. 미국은 가정을 비롯해 더 많은 코스메틱 시술이 곳곳에서 증가하고 있지만, 인구대비건수에서는 얘기가 달라진다. 이 방법은 다음 챠트에서 보듯이 몸을 치장하고 단장하기가 계속되는 한국, 그리스, 이탈리아 다음이다.

 가장 많은 외과 시술은 지방제거술, 지방흡인술로 세계적으로 비만화가 늘어나고 있음을 반영하고 있다.

가슴수술은 두번째로 수술건수가 증가하여 미국과 브라질에서 가장 일반적으로 이뤄지고 있다. 보톡스 역시 부인과 성형만큼 브라질 전문. 아시아는 코성형이 강세. 중국, 일본 그리고 한국은 나라별 코성형 순위 5위권안에 든다.

MORE people than ever are turning to the knife or the needle in the hope of physical perfection. Over 14.7m tucks, peels, jabs and lifts were performed by licensed plastic surgeons in 2011, according to a new study from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. The society estimates procedures by taking survey data received by licensed plastic surgeons and combining these with the official numbers of surgeons in a country. Non-invasive treatments to plump out wrinkles, smooth lines and remove hair account for more than half of all procedures: over 3m of these are for botox alone. America is home to more cosmetic enhancement than anywhere else, but accounting for population reveals a different story.  설마 오번역을 했다고는 믿고싶지 않다. 다만 자극적인 헤드라인과 기사로 클릭수를 뽑아내기에 혈안이 된 상황에서 데스크의 의도적인 게이트키핑과 이로인해 본질을 왜곡시켜 세태인식을 더욱 악화하게 만드는 결과를 초래한 부정적 사례로 보인다. 

 '성형대국' 혹은 '성형강국'이라는 자조적인 수식어는 외국에서도 불명예스런 한국의 이미지로, 한국의 또다른 이름으로 통용될 수 있음을 인지해야 한다. 누군가에게 좋은 먹잇감을 스스로 만드는 우를 범하지 말자.
